Cycling fever struck Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment with thousands of riders and spectators taking to the Cycle Live Nottingham site. The weather may have been mixed but with the return of the racing and the expansion of the Great Notts Bike Ride it was another hugely successful year for the event.
Saturday 25th June saw the return of the ever popular family friendly ride, the Innes England City Ride Nottingham. This saw families out in force participating in the child-friendly 2.5, 7.5 and 10.5 mile cycles. The East Midlands commercial property agents also sponsored the Innes England Team Relay, which was a fantastic start to an action packed afternoon of racing.
The Cycle Live Omnium saw competitors go head to head in three races to score points which would confirm the overall winner. Following a time trial, elimination race and a grand final, the winner Chris Bailey was awarded the top spot and presented with the winner’s jersey by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Mohammed Saghir.
On Sunday 26th June, more than 4,000 cyclists from across the country gathered to take part in the 35th Great Notts Bike Ride. This year saw the debut of two new routes to celebrate the anniversary year, including the 125 mile Sheriff which saw riders set off at 6.30am. The riders had some harsh weather to contend with first thing, but as the morning wore on the sun appeared and was thoroughly enjoyed by a packed out event village.
Event Director of Cycle Live Nottingham, Nik Emmonds said;
“It was great to see so many people taking part in Cycle Live for another year, even despite the changeable weather we experienced. We had a record number of participants this year and we are really pleased to see that the event is growing year on year.
“We would like to thank all of the participants for joining us for another year and helping to make the weekend so successful.”
Many cyclists throughout the weekend were raising money for local charities and causes. The official charity partner of Cycle Live Nottingham is national charity When You Wish Upon a Star which is based in Nottingham, who grant the wishes of children living with life threatening illnesses.
Entries for the 2017 Great Notts Bike Ride are open for a limited time. The date for next year’s Cycle Live Nottingham has been provisionally set as Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June 2017.
